ADHD: stigma, shame, and the feeling of failing as a parent
Chatting to presenter Jeff Brazier, whose youngest son also has ADHD. I shared the story behind the All Aboard ADHD podcast, and my experiences as a parent of a young boy with ADHD:
“It was full on, and he was bouncing off the walls – couldn't sit still, a lot of issues around sleep – I thought I was failing as a parent, because I couldn't help him manage certain situations that maybe other children were able to do…”
Opening the VT, Jeff spoke about the stigma and misunderstanding that’s still attached to ADHD - how the label and diagnosis was a huge help for him and his son:
“ADHD can be a difficult subject for any family to navigate. My son was diagnosed when he was 10 years old, and school was really challenging – but his diagnosis helped me understand better that he needed support.”
My son Zane uses his voice to share his experiences, how ADHD shows up for him – and the difference that a diagnosis can make. ADHD isn’t just about hyperactivity or distraction for Zane. It’s a whirlwind of thoughts; “some bad, some good”, as he puts it:
“There's almost no situation where I feel like I can just sit still for ages, my body wouldn't be able to cope… I used to think that I was the only one with it…”
It’s a positive and powerful piece about the difference that understanding can make, and why championing strengths is key to building self-esteem in children with ADHD.
Late diagnosed ADHD – and the genetics of neurodiversity
The genetic links are highlighted further when BBC broadcaster Nicky Campbell and his daughter Kirsty share Nicky’s late diagnosis story, following his daughter’s – and their command of music as an ADHD superpower.
Kirsty sums up her own experience of ADHD as “hyperactivity of the mind”:
“I use the analogy of a popcorn machine – constant thoughts. My brain is never silent, but it's not just about focus, it's also about the way I regulate my emotions…”
Nicky’s story is a lot like my own, and that of many other parents.
Through the ADHD journeys of our children, parents often come to discover how ADHD is part of us, too. That’s because ADHD has a strong genetic component, which world renowned ADHD expert (and my first ever podcast guest) Professor Edmund Sonuga-Barke explains further on the show:
“Without a doubt, ADHD runs in families and is genetic to a large degree. That creates positives and negatives… Positives are, a sort of creative chaos in many families; openness, a lot of warmth, a lot of humour and fun… but there are some downsides, because people with ADHD parent in a somewhat different way. Maybe a bit less consistent, a bit more overreactive to their children's behaviour…”
